ABOUT THE ARTIST
Eva Ayllón was born María Angélica Ayllón Urbina
on February 7, 1956. She adopted the name “Eva”
from her maternal grandmother, who began teaching
her music at age three. Within a few years, she
was singing at school, youth competitions and, later,
on television and radio. In the early 1970s she began
to appear in many of the local “peñas criollas” (gatherings
of musicians), and to define herself as one of
the leading exponents of Peru’s música criolla.
Eva focuses on the elegant and lively genres of the
coastal plains of Lima. She is known for singing the
landó, festejo and the vals; all mestizo blends of Peru’s
indigenous, African and Spanish musical heritage.
The guitar recalls flamenco idioms one moment
and alludes to Andean mountain music the next.
The cajón—a wooden percussion box thought to be
derived from an agricultural crate—translates African
rhythms to Latin America. Call-and-response,
complex syncopation and polyrhythms combine
with sweet, melancholic melodies to create a sound
unique to Peru’s diverse ancestry. One of the most
important interpreters of Peruvian music, Eva is deservedly
known as the “Queen of Landó.”
From 1973-1975, Eva sang lead vocals in the popular
trio Los Kipus, eventually leaving the group to pursue
a solo career. By 1979, she began touring internationally,
with appearances in Europe, the United
States, Canada and Japan, and since then her music
and live performances are requested on a yearly
basis at international music events. In 1989, Eva
formed Los Hijos del Sol, together with Alex Acuña.
This “supergroup” was made up of an all-star cast
of Peruvian musicians, with the purpose of refreshing
and promoting Peruvian music worldwide. The
original recordings and the subsequent live performances
of Los Hijos del Sol were a landmark in the
history of Peruvian music.
Eva’s award-winning Peruvian discography spans
over 20 albums. She has four platinum and ten
gold records to her credit, and two Latin Grammy
nominations, for her CD Eva and the CD To My
Country, which she recorded with Los Hijos del Sol
and Alex Acuña. She released her first U.S. album,
Eva! Leyenda Peruana, on Times Square Records
in 2004. Since then, her musical presence continues
to expand boundaries. In her commitment to
broaden the awareness of Afro-Peruvian culture,
Eva changed her residence from Lima, Peru to New
Jersey in 2005. Since then, she and her group have
been touring across Europe, North America and
Latin America extensively. Eva has begun recording
her next album, which will reveal a new approach to
her style, with new compositions and arrangements
of fan-loved traditions, as well as featuring her versatility
in the mastering of other genres.
This is Eva Ayllón’s first performance at the Hopkins
Center.
